The Perils of

Museum of Menstruation and Women's Health
Marriage Hygiene, booklet, 1932,
Lysol vaginal douche, U.S.A
Lehn & Fink, Inc.
Women often squirted Lysol (and
soft drinks,
etc.) into the vagina as a way to
kill sperm as well to reduce odor
and treat infections. As Andrea
Tone emphasizes in Devices &
Desires: A History of
Contraceptives in America, most
sperm eluded Lysol and many women
suffered burns and irritation and
worse. (But an 89-year-old
Canadian wrote to MUM about
her positive experience - at least
that's what she can remember -
with Lysol douches.)
This booklet from the heyday of
douching quotes European women
doctors - if they existed - about
the benefits of douching, European
medicine being seen as probably
more impressive, the names
certainly attention getting,
especially the women with the
first name George.
Read 1930s criticism
of Zonite and Lysol. More douches
in the column at left.

Lehn & Fink also
produced a tampon
- another birth control
device?

"no pregnancy" - think
Planned Parenthood - doesn't it?
Women often used Lysol to kill
sperm in their vaginas - uh, they
thought they were but apparently
it was hardly effective except in
injuring their tissue, according
to Andrea Tone, in Devices &
Desires, (2001, Hill
& Wang).
