Fabre, just as
countless American astonished
women must have done. The three
doctors pictured in the booklet
are serious looking, typical,
actually, for Europeans in that
era, especially in German-speaking
areas. Years ago I read a booklet
for Mormon missionaries to this
area warning that strangers do not
smile at one another; smiling is
mostly among family members and
colleagues.
"Germ,"
used below, can mean both
harmful bacteria and viruses,
the everyday usage now, and "a
small mass of living substance
capable of developing into an
organism or one of its parts"
(Merriam-Webster online
dictionary), as in wheat germ.
Or sperm. I think the ambiguity
is intended because of the legal
problems of contraception in
America.
