Kotex Ad for Teenagers, "Some Days I'm Happy,"
1942
This ad shows terrific period -
excuse me - teenage culture (note
"boogie-woogie" under "SOME DAYS" and
in the third line of the text,
"swings"), what with the Victrola (record player
to you) and naive drawings.
But the blues (and Kotex blue)
stretch across all eras, as does
menstruation, and the ad sells comfort and safety
and self-confidence, as they
have always done and always will. Kotex blue,
which the company history called
hospital blue, bubbles up in the blue
liquid and stain ads for pads and
tampons and came in for the
disgruntlement of Dr. Lillian Gilbreth
(here).
Read the booklet "As One Girl to
Another," mentioned at the bottom
of the ad. It's just as casual as this
ad, differing from the typical formality of
earlier ones.
