MUSEUM OF MENSTRUATION AND WOMEN'S HEALTH

Modess menarche, menstruation & puberty booklet
Essence of Womanhood, 1959, complete

Apparently aimed at all women rather than just menarcheal girls, the obsolete Modess brand of pads and tampons created this fancy but also explicit booklet to explain menstruation. The fashion-drawing-like pictures reflected the concurrent "Modess . . . . because" ad series, probably the most elegant and taciturn ads ever for American menstrual products (see a similarly elegant Modess booklet from a little later). But this booklet is not taciturn.

Its illustrations rank almost with the ground-breaking medical article "Tampons as menstrual guards" from 1945 in their detail in contrast to the earliest booklets.

(See a Kotex booklet from the same year.)

See also Personal Digest and Growing up and liking it from the same company, and Lynn Peril's article about such booklets.
