Zero-Gel Vaginal Cream magazine ad
(U.S.A., 1932)
The American magazine Love Mirror,
in April 1932, published this
advertisement for "feminine hygiene" -
which could mean it kills sperm (as a
contraceptive) or destroys
odor-causing bacteria in the vagina,
or both. I suspect it could also serve
as a lubricant for sexual intercourse.
The text says a "famous German
chemist" created it, showing the
prestige Germany had in science before
it chased out or killed most of its
Jewish researchers. The fascinating
book "Deutschland ohne Juden" -
"Germany Without Jews" - charts the
way that country's loss of Jews
drastically lowered its Nobel Prize
winners as well as devastated its
cultural and intellectual life. The
Nazi prelude to World War II enticed
many of Germany's brightest people,
including non-Jews (Thomas Mann is a
big example), to the United States.
Here's the cover
of Love Mirror, which is classic
thirties illustration, actually very
good.
