Leaflet ad for Kotex Wondersoft menstrual pad,
belt (1933, U.S.A.)
(Kotex, sanitary napkin, pad, menstruation, belt, menstrual, period, cycle,
Mary Pauline Callender, Marjorie May)
Women possibly found this leaflet in boxes of Kotex sanitary napkins.
The left side of p. 1 bears a "Dear Madame" statement from
the author of the Marjorie May menarche education
booklets, Mary Pauline Callender, that Kotex
supplied to interested people from the 1920s through the 1930s.
This ad is a variation of another ad.
An e-mailer sent me the following in June, 2010:
Mary [photo] was the grandmother
of my niece's husband. She was born 27 June 1905 in Dublin, Ireland, to
Thomas Callender and Margaret Allgood. On 28 June 1926 she married Morton
Hague in London, England. He worked for Kotex which is probably how she
got involved. In addition to her writing career, she also worked in commercials
and made a movie. She died at her daughter's house in Huntington Beach,
California, on 11 June 2005.
[That made this important person in the cultural history of menstruation
almost 100 years old. All three important
dates are in June.]
See how a woman wore a belt in a Dutch ad.
I thank the donor for this and many other items donated to this museum!
