See a Modess True or
False? ad in The American Girl magazine,
January 1947, and actress Carol Lynley in "How
Shall I Tell My Daughter" booklet ad (1955) -
Modess . . . . because
ads (many dates).

o.b. tampon ad, the Netherlands, 2005
Allerhande magazine
As I've mentioned elsewhere on
MUM, European ads for menstrual
hygiene have used nudity (in Germany, France);
America has not. Why nudity can sell
perfume and not menstrual products
in the U.S.A. has to do with the
strange way Americans look at
menstruation, which I'll feature in
my upcoming comic strip (or graphic
novella, to elevate it a bit) on
this MUM site - it starts in May
2006. Europe also used humor before
Americans did, especially in the
United Kingdom (here, for
example). And I think Americans ads
seldom say "menstruation," as the
Dutch ad below does. Maybe Europe
just faces the facts.
I thank the generous Dutchman who
sent this scan!

The words at the top
right read (my translation):
"Feel comfortable while you
menstruate.
Even if you don't have anything on." |
See the roughly contemporary Cashay and Dale tampons, and
very early Tampax
and fax.
