"We're #2[.] We try harder."
Playtex menstrual tampons, promotional folder for dealers, 1972

Who's number 2? I thought it was Avis rental
cars.
According to Answers.com, "1963: The [Avis] slogan 'We try harder'
is used for the first time" in its battle with Hertz for rental car
money. Sometimes its advertising included variations on "We're #2."
I suspect no copyright infringement occurred because tampons are not
the same as cars and the government allows such imitation in different categories.
But Playtex was indeed behind
Tampax. Later, in 1974, Rely
challenged Tampax even more with its super absorbency, a huge problem later
in the decade when it killed and sickened many women.
Companies often make promotional folders like this one - for example,
"All Eyes are on Tampax in 1964." Tampax new-ad campaign folder, 1964, U.S.A.; includes 8 large
glossy copies of new ads and a list of publications
with Tampax advertising. See the column at
left for more.
I thank the contributor, Tambrands, the former maker of Tampax,
for the donation!
