Tuberculosis (first paragraph) had not yet yielded to drug treatment (that would only happen in 1946) and worried (and killed) many Americans even though the German Robert Koch had discovered the cause in 1882, receiving the Nobel Prize in 1906 as a reward. All kinds of theories about its treatment and prevention floated about.
