Carefree Teens pantyliner (1991, Personal Products Corp., U.S.A.)
"Carefree Teens" sounds like an oxymoron, at least in America,
and even more so when you think of menstruation. But I think the manufacturer
thought that if anyone in American would buy colorful pads, it would be
teenagers, certainly not adults.
This pantyliner resembled French (note the
confetti in both) and German products of about
the same time and some washable pads of
today, which are often colorful. But the American menstrual products industry
takes a grim view of its products - reflecting most of their customers'
feelings - and I don't believe this colorful pantyliner lasted long.
It was un-American.
It ran up against adman David Ogilvy's observation that advertising
reflects society (and I think packaging is a form of advertising) - it doesn't
try to change it. It uses customers' attitudes to get them to buy the product
advertised.
