B-ettes menstrual tampon (U.S.A., about
1939)
the open display box
Procter & Gamble kindly donated the
box and contents as part of a gift of
scores of menstrual products.
Below: the B-ettes
Corporation sent this free
counter-display box to drug stores
as an enticement to order more
(read the "letter"
accompanying this, part of a
proposal).
|
The counter display
holds only two packs; I'm sure the
company didn't want to go broke
giving away free samples.
The dark areas,
including text, is the blue of the
display box. The white areas are
actually light blue.
No text appears on
the sides or bottom, which would warm
Dr. Lillian Gilbreth's heart,
as it helps disguise the contents.
As soon as we reach
the only item not meant for
customers' eyes, the proposal,
red flashes at us, blue
disappearing altogether.
The Good
Housekeeping guarantee logo, to
the right of the word B-ettes on
the pack top, is printed on a
cellophane-like material and
adheres to the cover.
The bottom pack
arrived at MUM opened; undoubtedly
eyes at Tampax inspected it over
sixty years ago. Procter &
Gamble then inherited the box when
it bought Tambrands in 1997,
generously sending it to MUM in
2001.
