The main public concern with toxic shock syndrome (p.24), something that has afflicted males and females
perhaps for centuries, started around 1979-80, when certain kinds of tampons seemed to promote the growth
of the organism that allegedly caused it. The company that made this booklet made the prime suspect in
that crisis.
