A New York Film Festival to Show the Film Under Wraps

Penny Wheelwright, producer and writer for the great film about menstruation today (read more here), writes that the Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival at The American Museum of Natural History in New York City will show it on these dates: Sunday, November 8th at 3:30 pm; Monday, November 9th at 7:30 pm and Wednesday, November 11th at 9:00 pm.

The Canadian all-women Starry Night Productions made Under Wraps and it appeared several times on Canadian television. This museum makes up a small section.

See it!!

Celebrate A First Period!

We all know that most women in America conceal their menstruation at all costs, hiding something that Simone de Beauvoir said represents the essence of femininity.

So most women feel ashamed of that very thing that distinguishes them from men? I beg your pardon?

Helynna Brooke wants you to instead celebrate this feminine essence with a ceremony, and has made a kit (you see a small part of it at left) for a girl having her first period and those close to her.

Although not a unique idea in America or in many other places - see the film Under Wraps (above) for Tamara Slayton's approach - she has a special way to do this.

Her Web site tells the story, or call her toll free: 888-965-4812!

Celebrate!

Relieve the Women of Williamsburg!

That's what Daisy Decapite does with her 'zine (at left).

This Williamsburg occupies part of Brooklyn, New York, and readers get a great variety of information and opinions not only about menstruation, but guys, salty spots (no, you have to read it), poems and - well, stuff!

It's not dull. And the illustrations zip it up. Many have a woodcut look - very attractive!

Write Daisy, who wants you to "enjoy your bleedin' day!"

Mystery "Person" Sends Me A Daintette Menstrual Cup!

Yesterday I opened a box with a green, printed address label from "Mrs. Mary Coleman, Middlefield, Conn." (with no ZIP code) that contained a Daintette cup and fresh material you can see on this site (see also what the Finney County Historical Society, Kansas, sent me). There was no letter, just a couple of spare annotations on two of the papers.

According to the documents sent me, Mrs. Mary Coleman invented the Dainty Maid douche apparatus before 1930. Hm, that's, uh, 68 years ago. And the Dainty Maid company failed in the 1970s.

Do the spirits of Dainty Maid and Mrs. Coleman fly about Middlefield, fulfilling inquirers' requests, and hoping that douching will never die?

Reminder: The Museum Closes Until 7 November, But This Site Marches On

Do You Have Irregular Menses?

If so, you may have polycystic ovary syndrome.

Jane Newman, Clinical Research Coordinator at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard University School of Medicine, asked me to tell you that

Irregular menses identify women at high risk for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which exists in 6-10% of women of reproductive age. PCOS is a major cause of infertility and is linked to diabetes.

Learn more about current research on PCOS at Brigham and Women's Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania State University - or contact Jane Newman.

If you have fewer than six periods a year, you may be eligible to participate in the study!
