The Lydia E. Pinkham Medicine Co.,
maker of medicine for headaches,
stomach illness, insomnia, depression, cancer,
tumors, women's diseases,
flatulence, menstruation, fertility, etc.:
"Home Talks" pamphlet,
two sample pages
The Pinkham company published many
items, including the mix of recipes,
meat prices, remedies and testimonials
in this booklet from around 1915.
Note the interesting discussion of
women's health and the effectiveness
of the Pinkham medicine on the left-hand page (of
Home
Talks). Isn't
the language wonderful and
outrageous? "[G]et their
hold, cure in a day," - how down to
earth can you get? And if an ailing
woman gets plastered often enough -
the alcohol content of Mrs. Pinkham's
Compound was more than wine - she sure
didn't feel those premenstrual pains,
or many other problems! I wonder if
the imbibers realized that the
effective ingredient was alcohol?
By the way, the book recommended at
the bottom right, Private Text-Book
Upon Ailments Peculiar to Women,

The
Schlesinger Library, of the
Radcliffe Institute for Advanced
Study, part of Harvard University,
has probably the largest collection
of material about the Pinkham
enterprise, the records of the Lydia
E. Pinkham Medicine Company.
Part of the donation of SarahAnne
Hazelwood to this museum, much of it
patent medicine and old medical
equipment, was a very interesting
biography and study of Mrs. Pinkham's
business, Female
Complaints: Lydia Pinkham and the
Business of Women's Medicine,
by Sarah Stage.
