Kotex menstrual napkin ad, U.S.A., March 19,
1927
Detail
The Kimberly-Clark company sold the
early Kotex as flushable down a toilet
(see instructions
for a Spanish audience) but this
stopped up too many toilets, as
recounted here.
In the early 20th century customers
often had to ask a clerk for a
product. Kotex ad men insisted stores
put Kotex boxes on counters, relieving
women of the sometimes embarrassing
necessity (probably today too) of
asking for it, as pictured in the last
drawing - although this conflicts with
the text underneath. See a drawing from
the early 1920s showing merchants how
to sell Kotex.
The drawings show again the
upper-middle-class-and-above women who
could afford Kotex.
